Welcome. In this video I’ll walk you through step by step how to install a WordPress plugin. Plugins are a great feature to add to WordPress and it extends the functionality of your website. So if you’re ready let’s get started. As a note you wanna make sure that you’re on your own self hosted website if you’re logging in to wordpress.com then this won’t work for you. The first thing you want to do is go to your admin area on your website and login. This will take you to your dashboard. From the dashboard you want to make sure you’re looking for the plugin section, installed plugins. By default you’ll have this one you’ll also have Hello Dolly install we’re gonna click Add New and from here we want to go over to the search plugins area. And this will search the whole WordPress plugins repository for the plugin that we’re looking for.
For this example we’re going to install the floating social bar and that was one of our first plugins that we ever created on WPBeginner and you can see this is the one that we’re looking for. So I’m gonna click Install Now. You can see that it’s going through the process of downloading the information unpacking it and installing the plugin. Now it’s installed but it’s not activated so we’ll want to go ahead and activate it. Once you activate the plugin that means it’s ready to be used on your website. When you install a plugin each plugin will have a different setting sections so we’re not gonna cover that in this video, each plugin is different. So that’s one way you can install a plugin. The next way you can install one is by clicking Add new and from here instead of searching for it if you’ve downloaded it, if you’ve bought a premium plugin or what have you and you’ve downloaded the plug into your computer.
Then you just want to click Upload Plugin. From here you want to choose the plugin. That’s the one I want to use it’s usually, when you download a plug into your computer it’s a zip file that you’re looking for. So I’ll pick that one, and we’ll click install now. Again you just want to activate it. Once it’s installed to be able to use it. So right now this one’s showing active and this one’s showing not active yet you just have to click that. But I wanted to show you one more way to do it. So I’m going to delete this one and the third way to do it it’s actually the least friendly for beginners but you can use an FTP client to upload your files to your website.
And what we’re using is the FileZilla FTP client. I have navigated on the right is my website that I’m at and on the left is my local desktop with my plugin. To upload the plugin this way you want to unzip your plugin. Here’s the plugin that I wanna install so I need to right-click and extract it all. I’ll extract it there. Now this is my plugin that I wanna upload so from my FileZilla on the left I need to find that location. This is my plugin so this is the folder i’m looking for, and on the right this is our website. And you wanna make sure that you go to your wp content area / plugins area because this is where we’ll upload it. So with the clients you can either right click and just say upload or you can left click and drag I just right click and uploaded it. It’ll transfer all the files and folders to the area that we need And you can see down here the queued files that they’re working on.
Once you upload the plugin via the FTP the FTP will upload it but it won’t activate it so you’ll need to go into your plugin section and activate the plugin. And that’s how you install WordPress plugins on your site. If you like this video click on the like button and go ahead and leave us a comment.
